Two-Day Millinery - Blocked Hats

This class is for people who are interested in learning blocking, finishing and trimming techniques using felt, straw and fabric in order to create and produce your own design.
Over the two days the course covers the essential techniques in constructing a 'blocked' hat in felt or straw using wooden blocks and learning how to make a pattern for a pillbox hat:
- how to measure the head
- how to prepare a hat block before use
- how to soften felt for blocking
- how to make a pattern
- how to soften straw for blocking
- how to use pins
- millinery stitches
- finishing and trimming
All the work is done by hand. Dan, the course tutor, always does her very best to ensure everyone attending this class goes away with a professional looking hat they will be happy to wear, whatever the function and that she herself is proud of.
The price includes refreshments and some very basic materials essential to hat making such as thread, millinery blocking wire, and petersham for hat bands.
You will need to bring:
- The materials for the hat itself, which includes: felt, straw, various other fabrics. If you need help or advice with this please let us know before you attend the class.
- Pins, hand sewing needles, scissors
- Trimmings: feathers, veiling, flowers, and beads
- Notepad and pen for any notes
