The Made-to-Measure Techniques Course is designed for people who have had experience in making a fully-closed pair of shoes and want to further their skills in bespoke shoemaking. The course is also ideal for people who have unusual foot shape or have difficulty finding comfortable shoes in the market. It is divided into two modules, which we recommend taking in conjunction with each other. If you haven’t taken Module 1 already, please book into this course first. The techniques you learn in these two courses allow you to make your own insole, sole and heel with leather while in our other shoemaking courses you use the ready-made components.

In the first module you have learnt how to adjust a last to fit your foot and made a shoe to fitting stage, in the second module you will fit the shoes and make any adjustments and finally complete them. After two modules, you will work towards completing the shoe using traditional hand techniques and walk away with the most guarded industry secrets and a pair of fully comfortable shoes, tailor-made to your own foot measurements.

Content of Module 2:

•   Evaluating and fitting the shoe
•   Making any adjustments required
•   Making leather stacked heels
•   Making leather soles
•   Hand finishing heel and sole

You will work towards completion of the shoe with leather stacked heels and leather soles. Completion is generally achievable, but if many adjustments are needed there may be a shortage of time.

Things you need to bring with you:

Your shoes and lasts from Module 1
Leather which you wish to make your shoe upper with. Please click the Useful Links to view the supplier list about where to source leather or fabric. You don't need to bring leather for heels, insole boards or soles as these are provided by us and included in the course fee
Sharp fabric scissors
Notebook and pen

Please note, the class does not cover orthopaedic footwear.
